Film, Screen and Digital Arts in the ACT
Screen Sector Roundtables
In 2010, artsACT held roundtable meetings with ACT film and screen sector representatives to discuss future opportunities for the sector. Two roundtable meetings were held. The first in June 2010 identified issues and the second in August 2010, discussed ideas to address the issues. Attendees included representatives from ScreenACT, ACT Filmmakers Network, ACT Cultural Council, Australian National University, Canberra International Film Festival, Canberra Institute of Technology, University of Canberra, and a range of independent film and screen practitioners and businesses.
The key issues raised during the roundtable process were the need for sector cohesion, career pathways, capacity building, producer development, activity increase and a single film funding source.
The key idea for the future is the creation of a single umbrella organisation. This organisation would provide a single funding source for the industry, develop both arts and business outcomes and career pathways, allow better and more effective dialogue between other state and national agencies, and leverage development funding including from Screen Australia.
Based on these discussions, artsACT has developed an ACT Film and Screen Sector Forward Plan (PDF 105KB) which includes a vision for the ACT film and screen sector and a number of key actions by the Government. These are to facilitate the sector to have one umbrella organisation, providing all current ACT Arts Fund film funding to this organisation on a trial basis to support grassroots filmmakers. The Plan also includes a key action by the sector to develop a strategic plan through ScreenACT, which is underway.
The former Chief Minister, Mr Jon Stanhope MLA, approved funding from the ACT Arts Fund of $64,500 for 2011 to ScreenACT to support grassroots and emerging filmmakers, as the first part of progressing the single funding model for screen/film funding for the ACT through ScreenACT.
