First Seen: new works in progress 2018
The Street reaches out to writers to be seen and heard on stage
When: applications close 20 March.
Key development dates in 2018 are 16-22 April, 12-17 June and 9-15 July.
First Seen is The Street’s season of new theatre works on the journey from conception to full production. It is a vital part of The Street’s planning for future years as it seeks to bring original and diverse stories to the stage, encouraging debate on the social, economic, cultural and political relationships central to the reality of lives of Canberrans.
Applications are now open for 2018 and close on 20 March. The program is open to ACT residents and writers living within a 120 km radius of the ACT, and to writers who are part of Canberra’s creative diaspora – those who grew up in Canberra, studied in Canberra or worked in Canberra but not currently based here.
First Seen: new works in progress offers three playwrights the opportunity to collaborate with a creative team to further develop their work through intensive practical investigation. Writers are asked to share the development of their work with Canberra audiences and are provided with a weekly wage. Audiences in past seasons have responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to participate in the development process through public showings and discussions of selected works.
Currently having its world premiere at The Street, The Weight of Light (Featherstone and Humberstone) had its genesis in the 2017 First Seen season as Homesong and plays at the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium in March before touring later this year.
