Matthew Harding 1964-2018
On 22 February 2018 Matthew Harding, renowned artist, ended his life.
Matthew was an extraordinarily talented artist who trained locally at the ANU School of Art and Design and was recognised nationally and internationally. He was prolific in his practice of almost three decades and during this time was commissioned to create thirteen artworks for Canberra.
The sculptures by Matthew located in the ACT reflect his versatility as an artist and his expert ability to work with a range of materials. Artworks in bronze such as the Casuarina Pods in City Walk and in stainless steel such as Ebb and Flow in Bunda Street show an exceptional aesthetic and technical response. His masterful stone carving is on show in Longitude, an artwork commissioned for Veterans Park in the City. Most locals would know The Cushion in Garema Place and the ACT Memorial in Ainslie Avenue, also works striking in form and technical precision. However here in Canberra, Matthews’s best known and most loved work is likely the Kambah Sheep, a playful herd of metal sheep that herald arrival in the Tuggeranong Valley from the north.
His artworks have shaped our experience of urban places in Canberra providing visual interest and delight to so many. We are grateful to him for the legacy of these artworks that are an integral part of our city’s cultural landscape.
Matthew’s funeral will be held at 11am on Thursday 8th March, 2018.
St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Trentham, Victoria.
