2012 ACT Creative Arts Fellowship
  • Susanne Powell: Funding an ACT Creative Arts Fellowship in 2012 - $45,000

Susanne Powell is a highly experienced and critically acclaimed musician who has had a distinguished career as a piano chamber music player, accompanist and orchestral pianist. She is presently a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University School of Music and has been a principal pianist for the Canberra Symphony Orchestra for many years.

In her fellowship year, Powell intends to study and investigate the playing techniques and repertoire of the celeste in Australia, Europe and USA. This experience will enhance her expertise and lead her to become one of the few specialists of this instrument in Australia.

The celeste is an instrument similar in appearance to an upright piano, but with a sound more akin to a glockenspiel. One of the best-known works that makes use of the celeste is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from The Nutcracker.

The process of this work, including research travels, will be diarised and available as a blog by the artist.
