Capital Works Initiatives
Street Theatre Extension
The Street Theatre extension will provide accommodation for Theatre administrative functions, office space for other local performing arts organisations and rehearsal space. Theatre administrative functions are currently housed in a temporary demountable building located adjacent to the main facility building.
The ACT Government provided $150,000 in the 2010-11 financial year for the development of preliminary sketch plans for the design of the Street Theatre extension, as well as $1.28 million in 2011-12 and $1.9 million in 2012-13 to prepare final design documentation and to construct over two financial years.
Strathnairn Facility Improvements
The priority works for completion under the new funding are a new caretaker’s cottage located adjacent to the property entry gate, new artist’s studios and landscape works such as paths and planting to improve access and amenity. The works to be completed under this new initiative were identified in the Strathnairn Master Plan in close consultation with members of the Strathnairn Arts Association.
The ACT Government has allocated $400,000 in 2011-12 and $100,000 in 2012-13 to complete the improvement works at Strathnairn.
Tuggeranong Arts Centre Improvements
This initiative will address issues with functionality at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre. The internal building layout will be re-designed to provide additional space for existing programs and to meet the needs caused by growth in arts activity at the Centre.
The ACT Government has allocated $200,000 in 2011-12 for the design of capital improvements at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre.
Watson Arts Centre
The ACT Government allocated $747,000 in the 2010-11 Budget for new works at the Watson Arts Centre, including five new artists’ studios, Artists-in-Residence accommodation, as well as security and access improvements. Construction commenced in March 2011 and is now completed.
The new artists’ studios at Watson Arts Centre will expand the facilities Canberra Potters’ Society offers local artists for developing their art practices and careers. The new Artists-in-Residence accommodation will attract both national and international artists to Canberra, which, in turn, will provide learning, professional development and networking opportunities for local artists
Canberra Glassworks and Other Arts Facilities Fire Systems Improvements
The ACT Government allocated $1.2 million in 2011-12 and $200,000 in 2012-13 to meet modern compliance standards at the Canberra Glassworks and complete facilities fire systems reviews at other arts facilities.
