The inspiration for this work is the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen - The red shoes in which a pair of magic red shoes gives a young woman a fabulous ability to dance. The work alludes both to the sheer pleasure that a pair of red shoes can bring to an otherwise grey day and to empowerment. The shoes become tokens of both vulnerability and strength as many women still struggle to express identity at a personal and political level.
